Breaking stereotypes team, made a filed
research (survey) on a number of various groups from the same social sector, especially
(university students at faculty of Al-Alsun)
The survey contained some questions about
stereotyping seeking the students' opinions and views about the topic.
1-what do you know about stereotyping?
2-do you stereotyping is a natural phenomenon depends
on the social factors or it's just an action adopted by some people?
3-do you have any idea , why people tend to stereotype
others?
4-have you ever been stereotyped?
5-what do you think about those who stereotype people
all the time?
After applying these questions on a group
of students, we got so many answers which varied according to the experiences
of each person
* Rehab Safwt (student at third class English
department) , said that "we cannot judge people according to their
appearance only or making opinions without evidences, stereotyping is unfair in
this sense"
While the answer was
" stereotyping is what people say about you which is not the truth"
when we asked Dina helal " what do you know about stereotyping"
Another discussion took place between the
interviewers and a group of students about the question of "why some
people tend to stereotype others? And the answers was as follows:
Gehad Mohamed (a
student at Turkish department) said that "this may depend on the social
environment of those people"
Samar Ismail said
ironically the opposite of what her friend said and told her; "NO this has
nothing to do with cultural, social factors or whatever, this action is just
taken "individually" which means, there is no a whole society know for
stereotyping other societies, now you are yourself stereotyping a whole
society"
Nouran Mohsen replied
with "stereotyping mean racism" "I hate stereotyping because
this means that you are shallow person who judges people upon No fact"
ــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ
When it comes
to the question of " Do you have any experiences with stereotyping? We were
somehow shocked that most of the answers were almost the same
Fathi
moustafa (student at Russian department) said that "I was stereotyped by
being an introvert person who does not know how to socialize with others and
all my colleagues spread this among them, but this is not the truth, it is all
about love being alone and having some time to start acting friendly to others
but this does not mean I am introvert or anything else, this is just my
nature"
While Mohamed
fawzy (student at the same department) said "I am always stereotyped as
Muslim brotherhood member, just because I am argumentative person in politics
", his colleagues Mohamed kamal and Mohamed tarek suddenly said "
this also happened with us"
They were being stereotyped as thing
that-in fact- they are not, because others do love to frame them and categories
others, Is not that unfair for any one??
We met another group and actually the
answer was the same, most of people within our society are specified by their
political thoughts. Even if they are not that what they are being called, but
it seems that in recent years people in Egypt are being stereotyped and generalized
according to what they talk about mostly
ـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ
When it comes
to the question of what is the impact of stereotyping on people and society, we
noticed that even those who could not figure out the meaning of stereotyping at
first they rejected firmly this action after knowing the true definition of
stereotyping
Ghada saiid
and Abeer Mohamed (students of English department) said " when we are
stereotyped as being girls who do not know how to fight or to correctly park
their cars or even by being weak and so on, it really hurts and makes you want
to punch the person who said so in the face, and they asked wonderingly "
why people do such things?!! We are different, everyone should only focus on
their own stuff because this way we can be a great society not by labeling
others in streets or college or even facebook.
ـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ
At last, when
we asked the students if they ever tend to stereotype others some answered
negatively and other positively
Islam Adel
(student at Russian department) said I never stereotyped others , I am always
aware of the fact that generalization is not a good attitude at all we cannot
label people as what we want them to be.
But, Marwa Bakry admitted that she sometimes stereotypes people but this is unconsciously happens
with her " I listen to people say so and so about others then I just
believe, but I will begin thinking about that, I think I should be aware of
what I am thinking about.. I do not love to be stereotyped so I will stop
stereotyping"
ــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــ
The above data shows how university students
think about stereotyping and its effects on people and society.
Our team
wanted to get a close look on what stereotyping means to others ,and Are they
aware of the results of it or they are just acting unconsciously?
Our motto is "stop labeling, start living"
So we only
want to hear people and to correct wrong ideas as much as we can, and we
started from here..
